"إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَاهُ قُرْآنًا عَرَبِيًّا لَعَلَّكُمْ تَعْقِلُونَ"

We verily, have made it a Quran in Arabic, that you may be able to understand
— (surah yousuf ayah 2

The Arabic language stands as an indispensable component of Islamic knowledge, scholarship, and the socio-cultural fabric of Muslim communities. There is no viable alternative to learning Arabic for those seeking to acquire a profound understanding of Islamic teachings. A comprehensive grasp of the Quran and Hadith hinges upon proficiency in the Arabic language. Indeed, it is impossible to attain the stature of a true scholar without mastering Arabic.

Beyond its religious significance, Arabic holds immense global importance. It serves as the native language for 280 million people worldwide, while an additional 250 million individuals have adopted it as a second language.

Moreover, Arabic is the official language of 25 countries, solidifying its position as the most widely spoken language among Muslims.

Given its status as the language of the Holy Quran, learning Arabic is imperative for every Muslim. In Surah Ash-Shu’ara, verse 195, Allah Almighty declares, ‘And We have indeed made the Quran easy to understand and remember in a clear Arabic tongue.

‘ Elsewhere, the Holy  Quran states, ‘Indeed, I have revealed the Holy Quran in Arabic so that you might understand.’ (Surah Yusuf, verse 2) Further, Allah says, ‘Thus We have sent down the Holy Quran, an Arabic recitation, that you might understand.’ (Surah Ar-Ra’d, verse 113)

To ensure that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) acquired a pure Arabic dialect, his early childhood was spent in the household of Halima, a member of the Banu Sa’d tribe in Ta’if.

‘ Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) underscored the significance of Arabic by saying, ‘Learn the Arabic language, for it is a part of your religion.’ (Masbuquz Zahab: 1/9)

  • Ibnu Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy upon him) affirmed the centrality of Arabic in Islamic scholarship, stating, ‘Allah revealed the Quran in the Arabic language. And He instructed the beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) to propagate the Quran and Sunnah in the Arabic language. The first followers of the religion were Arabic-speaking. Therefore, there is no alternative to mastering this language to acquire deep knowledge of the religion. Hence, practicing Arabic is an integral part of the religion and a testament to one’s devotion.’ (Majmu’ul Fatawa: 8/343)
